Balayage

Ba·lay·age (balāˈyäZH). ( not bailyaege, boleyage or booleyage) A freehand technique for highlighting hair in which the lightener is painted on in such a way as to create a graduated, natural-looking effect. Because of the colour gradient, it creates a sun-kissed, softer result with a less noticeable growth pattern. This technique typically covers less ‘root’, something to keep in mind if grey coverage is an issue. Often requires a toner.

Foilyage

The effect created through the use of foils is similar to that achieved with balayage. This technique is generally utilized on darker hair/ previously coloured hair for the lightest possible result. The foils insulate the hair allowing for a greater amount of lift. Often requires a toner .

Babylights

Similar to traditional highlights in that they use foils to contain the hair that is being lifted. This technique uses super fine, delicate weaving which creates a very blended, natural result. This is a great technique to blend ‘natural highlights’, or introduce gentle colour. This technique is suited to fine hair Toner is sometimes required.

Traditional Highlights / Lowlights

The process uses packaged foils to divide and separate strands of hair that will be lightened or coloured from the root through to the ends, from those that will not. The weave of the hair that is being lightened, or that colour is being deposited is the highlight or lowlight. There can be a variation of placement, weave and sizing. Good for a big colour shift., creates uniform highlighted strands.

Shadow Root

AKA - A smudge, tap, shadow root, root melt - A semi/ demi permanent colour usually applied to your root after a highlighting service. Shadow roots are used to help softly blur the foil lines at a part to create a more natural ‘lived in’ effect. The stylist can control the distance and depth to which is created - its possible to ‘tap’ the root to blur lines or drag the colour down the hair strand to create a chosen effect. This is a great option to help gently blend out grey hair.

Gloss / Toner

Most often a semi/demi permanent colour chosen by the stylist to correct or customize your colour. It is used to add tones you want o appear more visible and/or correct tones that are undesired. Usually used in addition to a colour service. This is a good approach to refresh colour mid-lengths to ends if it has faded, add a little shine to dull locks or enhance a tone. Toners will fade over time and you may need to refresh between colour services.
